Women's Basketball Opens Season with Loss to William Carey

SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 10, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team started the season with a 66-50 loss to William Carey University (WCU) in the Halo Classic. The Saints are 0-1 while the Crusaders improve to 4-0.

History

This was the first meeting between the two programs.

Basics

The Saints struggled offensively in the season opener against WCU on Friday night. OLLU shot 34.6 percent from the field and 26.9 percent from the three-point line. The Crusaders were successful under the basket with 21 offensive rebounds and 34 points in the paint. The Saints limited the Crusaders to 8.3 percent shooting from three-point range. The Saints outscored the Crusaders in the first quarter but were limited to single digit points in the second and third frame. Tiffany Lopez finished with double digit points.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Lopez led the Saints with 15 points. Lopez also tallied a team-high eight rebounds. Deja Williams and Deja Hinson led the Saints with two assists apiece.

Shaneal Corpuz led WCU with 23 points. Corpuz also grabbed 10 rebounds to earn a double-double. Rose Warren led the team with five assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 18-of-52 shooting for 34.6 percent, 7-of-26 from three-point range for 26.9 percent and 7-of-13 from the free-throw line for 53.8 percent. WCU shot 27-of-64 for 42.2 percent, 1-of-12 three pointers for 8.3 percent and 11-of-17 from the free-throw line for 64.7 percent.

The Saints grabbed 21 rebounds while WCU collected 51. Both teams had 12 turnovers.
