Women's Basketball Outlasts JCU to Open Conference Play

HAWKINS, TEXAS (Nov. 30, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team defeated Jarvis Christian University (JCU) 63-58 to open Red River Athletic (RRAC) play. The Saints improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the RRAC. The Bulldogs drop to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in conference.

Head Coach Tanya Ray commented, "I'm proud we were able to pull out the win tonight. Any road win is a good win. We were able to stick through being down early, regain focus, and make key plays down the stretch."

History

The Saints were 25-3 against the Bulldogs prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints used a strong second half to beat the Bulldogs on Thursday night. JCU led after the first quarter by seven points backed by 40 percent shooting from three-point range. The Saints regrouped and outscored the Bulldogs 18-8 before halftime.

The Bulldogs kept the game close in the third quarter. The Saints shot 43.8 percent in the frame and Tiffany Lopez had eight points. JCU came within five points late in the fourth quarter, but the Saints made key free throws to hang on with the victory.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Lopez led the Saints with 16 points. Carrie Barrera-Lacy tallied a team-high eight rebounds. Barrera-Lacy also led the Saints with five assists.

Raniya White led JCU with 16 points. Faith Robinson grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and added 15 points for a double-double. Jacy Reese led the team with three assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 23-of-53 shooting for 43.4 percent, 3-of-15 from three-point range for 20 percent and 14-of-28 from the free-throw line for 50 percent. JCU shot 22-of-67 for 32.8 percent, 3-of-15 three pointers for 20 percent and 11-of-17 from the free-throw line for 64.7 percent.

The Saints grabbed 36 rebounds while JCU collected 33. The Saints forced 18 turnovers and committed 21.
