Women's Basketball Suffers Nonconference Loss to WBU
SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 29, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team lost to Wayland Baptist University (WBU) 72-58 on Friday. The Saints fall to 3-7 overall and remain at 2-3 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Flying Queens jump to 9-2 overall.
History
The Saints were 4-7 against the Flying Queens prior to the matchup.
Basics
The Saints started strong in the first quarter by shooting over 50 percent from both the field and three-point range. Cormia Lewis had two steals in the frame and Carrie Barrera-Lacy tallied seven points. OLLU struggled in the second quarter by scoring only four points while allowing 15. The Saints committed nine turnovers and the Flying Queens collected five offensive rebounds. WBU took a six-point lead into halftime.
The Flying Queens started the second half with 21 points, which would be their most in a quarter during the contest. They limited the Saints to single digit scoring again and shot 56.3 percent from the field. The Saints battled in the fourth quarter despite the deficit. They outscored the Flying Queens by five points and hit all four three-point shots. The Flying Queens won by 14 points aided by 25 forced turnovers.
Offensive/defensive standouts
Lewis led the Saints with 16 points. Lopez had eight rebounds. Lewis also tallied three assists for the Saints.
Megan Nestor led Wayland with 18 points. Taylor Houston grabbed 10 rebounds and added 12 points for a double-double. Emily Sigala led the Flying Queens with seven assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 19-of-51 shooting for 37.3 percent, 7-of-17 from three-point range for 41.2 percent and sunk all 13 free throws. WBU shot 32-of-76 for 42.1 percent, 3-of-18 three pointers for 16.7 percent and 5-of-10 from the free-throw line for 50 percent.
OLLU grabbed 22 rebounds while the Flying Queens collected 37. The Saints committed 25 turnovers and forced 15.
