Women's Basketball Drops Conference Game Versus NAU
SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 4, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team fell to North American University (NAU) 69-62 on Thursday. The Saints move to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Lady Stallions improve to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in conference.
Head Coach Tanya Ray said, "We had too many lapses on defense, and we were careless with the ball on offense. We must do a better job of protecting the ball and valuing every offensive possession."
History
The Saints won the only previous meeting against the Lady Stallions.
Basics
The Saints played a competitive first half against the Lady Stallions on Thursday night. Cormia Lewis had eight points in the first quarter and Tiffany Lopez added 12 in the second quarter. OLLU led by two points at halftime, and they forced eight turnovers. The Saints defense shined in the second quarter by not allowing a three-point shot by NAU on nine attempts.
The Lady Stallions stepped up their offense in the second half. They totaled 39 points compared to OLLU's 30. NAU hit all four of their three-point attempts in the third quarter and forced five turnovers by the Saints in the final quarter. Tiffany Lopez finished with a double-double, but it wasn't enough as the Saints lost by seven points.
Offensive/defensive standouts
Lopez led the Saints with 24 points. Lopez also tallied a team-high 18 rebounds. Cormia Lewis led the Saints with six assists.
Victoria Moore led NAU with 25 points. Kayla Dickey grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Moore also led the team with four assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 23-of-58 shooting for 39.7 percent, 3-of-20 from three-point range for 15 percent and 13-of-17 from the free-throw line for 76.5 percent. NAU shot 25-of-69 for 36.2 percent, 5-of-20 three pointers for 25 percent and 14-of-19 from the free-throw line for 73.7 percent.
The Saints grabbed 43 rebounds while NAU collected 27. The Saints forced 14 turnovers and committed 23.
