SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 6, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team fell in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) game against Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) on Saturday. The Saints are now 3-9 overall and 2-5 in the RRAC. The Gold Nuggets improve to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in conference.
History
The Saints were 5-5 against the Gold Nuggets prior to the game.
Basics
The Saints battled in the first quarter by scoring 12 points on 38.5 percent shooting from the field. The Gold Nuggets marked 13 points in the frame and forced four turnovers by the Saints. The Saints struggled in the second quarter and scored four points. XULA's offense rallied for 18 points, and they led by 15 points at halftime.
Xavier continued to shoot well in the second half. They shot 43.8 percent from the field in the third quarter and 50 percent from three-point range in the fourth quarter. Tiffany Lopez finished with a double-double for the Saints, but the halftime lead was too large to overcome. The Gold Nuggets won by 28 points to remain undefeated in the RRAC.
Offensive/defensive standouts
Lopez led the Saints with 13 points. Lopez also tallied a team-high 10 rebounds. Deja Williams led the Saints with three assists.
Taylor Dewitt and Patricia Sosa Lora led XULA with 13 points each. Dewitt also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for a double-double. Yara Bou Harb and Sosa Lora led the team with three assists apiece.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 15-of-53 shooting for 28.3 percent, 1-of-13 from three-point range for 7.7 percent and 9-of-13 from the free-throw line for 69.2 percent. XULA shot 23-of-68 for 33.8 percent, 7-of-18 three pointers for 38.9 percent and 15-of-20 from the free-throw line for 75 percent.
The Saints grabbed 22 rebounds while XULA collected 42. The Saints forced 12 turnovers and committed 20.
