Saints Women Lose in Final Minute to LSU-Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, LA. (Jan. 18, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team lost in the final minutes to LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) 68-59 on Thursday night. The Saints drop to 4-11 overall and 3-7 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Generals improve to 11-3 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

Head Coach Tanya Ray said, "I'm super proud of the way we competed tonight. We went out with a plan, and they did a great job of executing it. We had some questionable things happen late in the game and unfortunately, we did not come away with the win."

History

The Saints were 13-2 against the Generals prior to the matchup.

Basics

The Saints showed one of the best first half offensive performances this season. They scored 36 points before halftime backed by eight points apiece from Tiffany Lopez and Carrie Barrera-Lacy. OLLU shot 50 percent from the field in both the first and second quarters. They also hit 4-of-7 three-pointers in the first quarter. The Saints took a seven-point advantage into the break.

The third quarter was competitive with the Generals outscoring the Saints 13-10. OLLU led by as many as 10 points in the final quarter, but the Generals made a late comeback. LSU-Alexandria took a one-point lead with just under two minutes left. The Saints were unable to score another basket while the Generals added eight points. The Saints struggled from the free-throw line throughout the contest by making 8-of-16.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Lopez led the Saints with 15 points. Lopez also tallied a team-high 10 rebounds for a double-double. Three Saints players had three assists each.

Dannah Martin-Hartwick led LSUA with 18 points. Amani Gray grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Gray also led the team with seven assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 22-of-56 shooting for 39.3 percent, 7-of-24 from three-point range for 29.2 percent and 8-of-16 from the free-throw line for 50 percent. LSUA shot 23-of-62 for 37.1 percent, 7-of-21 three pointers for 33.3 percent and 15-of-22 from the free-throw line for 68.2 percent.

The Saints grabbed 33 rebounds while LSUA collected 40. The Saints forced 17 turnovers and committed 14.
