Solid Defense Lifts Saints Women Over Jarvis

SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 25, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team won a low-scoring game over Jarvis Christian University (JCU) 62-52 on Thursday. The Saints improve to 6-11 overall and 5-7 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Lady Bulldogs drop to 10-8 overall and 6-7 in the RRAC.

History

The Saints were 24-2 against the Lady Bulldogs prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints struggled out the gate by scoring six points in the first quarter. They quickly turned their offense around by totaling 19 points in the second quarter to lead by one point at halftime. Julia Plata and Ariadna Gallardo led the Saints with five points apiece in the first half. Cormia Lewis had eight rebounds at the break and OLLU forced nine turnovers.

OLLU's offense shined in the third quarter with 25 points backed by 52.4 percent shooting from the field. They also forced four turnovers in the frame and Tiffany Lopez tallied 10 points. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Saints in the fourth quarter, but OLLU's advantage was large enough to claim the 10-point victory. Lopez and Carrie Barrera-Lacy finished with double-digit scoring.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Lopez led the Saints with 18 points. Lopez and Lewis tallied a team-high 12 rebounds apiece. Deja Williams and Lewis totaled four assists each.

Jacy Reese led JCU with 20 points. Faith Robinson grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Micah McCrea led the team with two assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 22-of-66 shooting for 33.3 percent, 3-of-16 from three-point range for 18.8 percent and hit 15-of-21 free throws for 71.4 percent. JCU shot 18-of-64 for 28.1 percent, 5-of-13 three pointers for 38.5 percent and 11-of-20 from the free-throw line for 55 percent.

The Saints grabbed 40 rebounds while JCU collected 34. The Saints forced 18 turnovers and committed 14.
