Saints Women Earn Third Straight Victory in Win Over Texas College

SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 27, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team beat Texas College (TC) 78-61 on Thursday night for their third straight win. The Saints jump to 7-11 overall and 6-7 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Lady Steers drop to 3-16 overall and 2-12 in the RRAC.

History

The Saints were 24-2 against the Lady Steers prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints scored 78 points on Thursday night, which tied for their second most in a game this season. They started strong by scoring 19 points in the first quarter and limited the Lady Steers to five. Texas College picked up their offense in the second quarter. They scored 15 points, but the Saints kept pace and tallied 17. OLLU took a 16-point lead into halftime backed by 11 points from Cormia Lewis.

The Lady Steers outscored the Saints in the third quarter, but the deficit was too large to overcome. The Saints continued to shoot well by marking 50 percent from the field in the third frame and 43.8 percent in the fourth quarter. Lewis, Tiffany Lopez and Carlea Owens all finished with double-digit points. The Saints did a good job of drawing fouls and hit 22-of-27 free throws. OLLU won by 17 points for their sixth win in conference play.  

Offensive/defensive standouts

Lewis led the Saints with 19 points. Lopez tallied a team-high eight rebounds. Lewis totaled four assists.

Keaundra Kelly and Jan'Aa Johnson led TC with 16 points apiece. Kelly also grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Aliyah Solis and Serenity Jackson led the team with four assists each.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 27-of-57 shooting for 47.4 percent, 2-of-13 from three-point range for 15.4 percent and hit 22-of-27 free throws for 81.5 percent. TC shot 22-of-56 for 39.3 percent, 6-of-21 three pointers for 28.6 percent and 11-of-14 from the free-throw line for 78.6 percent.

The Saints grabbed 36 rebounds while TC collected 30. The Saints forced 20 turnovers and committed 16.
