Saints Women Defeated by Southwest in Final Minutes

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 10, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team lost to the University of the Southwest (USW) 66-62 in a close game on Saturday. The Saints move to 8-14 overall and 7-10 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Lady Mustangs improve to 11-13 overall and 7-11 in the RRAC.

History

The Saints were 25-2 against the Lady Mustangs prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints defense held the Lady Mustangs to 23 points in the first half. They limited Southwest to 28.6 percent shooting from the three-point line in the first quarter and didn't allow any three-pointers in the second quarter. OLLU led by six points at the break. The Lady Mustangs grabbed 10 offensive rebounds in the first half to keep the deficit close.

The third quarter proved to be the difference in the final result. USW's offense scored 27 points behind 83.3 percent shooting from three-point range. They had 16 offensive rebounds in the third quarter and multiple second chance points. The Saints outscored Southwest 20-16 in the fourth quarter, but the margin from the third quarter was too large to overcome. OLLU had three chances to tie the game in the final minute but were unable to score.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Cormia Lewis led the Saints with 18 points. Tiffany Lopez had 15 rebounds and added 14 points for a double-double. Julia Plata tallied three assists for the Saints.

Milinda Arguellez led Southwest with 24 points. Amaya Vasquez grabbed 16 rebounds. Arguellez also led the team with six assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 23-of-63 shooting for 36.5 percent, 3-of-13 from three-point range for 23.1 percent and 13-of-17 from the free-throw line for 76.5 percent. USW shot 20-of-65 for 30.8 percent, 8-of-23 three pointers for 34.8 percent and 18-of-23 from the free-throw line for 78.3 percent.

OLLU grabbed 39 rebounds while the Lady Mustangs collected 50. The Saints committed 13 turnovers and forced 16.
