Tiffany Lopez Scores 1,000th Point in Loss to Xavier

NEW ORLEANS (Feb. 24, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team lost a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) matchup against Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) 63-42 on Saturday. The Saints drop to 9-17 overall and 8-13 in the RRAC. The Gold Nuggets jump to 23-5 overall and 19-3 in conference.

Head Coach Tanya Ray commented, "This was a tough game today. Xavier is a very good defensive team, and they can make things difficult for you to make shots. We were not able to find a rhythm offensively and that hurt us."

History

The Saints were 5-6 against the Gold Nuggets prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints lost a low-scoring game against Xavier on Saturday. OLLU had double-digit points in both the first and second quarter, but the Gold Nuggets offense put up 28 points. The Saints trailed by six points at halftime and Cormia Lewis had five points. Both squads shot under 30 percent from the field in the first half.

The Gold Nuggets pulled away in the third quarter. They totaled 24 points on 42.9 percent shooting from the field. They also forced nine turnovers by the Saints. The Saints were limited to eight points in the final quarter and Xavier won by 21 points. Carrie Barrera-Lacy finished with double-digit points. Tiffany Lopez joined the Saints 1,000-Point Club after marking six points in the contest.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Barrera-Lacy led the Saints with 15 points. Lopez tallied a team-high nine rebounds. Barrera-Lacy also totaled three assists.

Taylor Dewitt led XULA with 15 points. Kyla Cage and Rayna Ross grabbed a team-high six rebounds apiece. Ross also led the team with five assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 13-of-53 shooting for 24.5 percent, 4-of-14 from three-point range for 28.6 percent and hit 12-of-22 free throws for 54.5 percent. XULA shot 26-of-72 for 36.1 percent, 2-of-15 three pointers for 13.3 percent and 9-of-13 from the free-throw line for 69.2 percent.

The Saints grabbed 39 rebounds while XULA collected 52. The Saints forced 19 turnovers and committed 20.
