Women's Basketball Shines in Fourth Quarter to Defeat HTU

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 27, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) 66-62 on Tuesday night. The Saints finish the regular season at 10-17 overall and 9-13 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Rams conclude the season at 11-13 overall and 9-13 in conference.

History

The Saints were 30-3 against the Rams prior to the game.

Basics

Both squads totaled 15 points in the first quarter. Tiffany Lopez tallied nine points in the first frame and Carrie Barrera-Lacy added two assists. The Saints outscored the Rams by eight points in the second quarter. They shot 66.7 percent from the field and grabbed 10 rebounds. The Saints took an eight-point advantage into halftime.

The Rams came out strong in the third quarter. They had 20 points in the frame and grabbed a one-point lead heading into the final quarter. The teams traded leads and the game was tied 62-62 with ten seconds remaining left. Barrera-Lacy sunk what would be the game winning jump shot with six seconds left. Lopez hit two free throws to secure the four-point victory for the Saints.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Lopez led the Saints with 17 points. Lopez also tallied a team-high 10 rebounds for a double-double. Evangeline Hernandez and Julia Plata totaled four assists apiece.

Danielle Porter led HTU with 20 points. Porter also grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds to earn a double-double. Ziara James led the team with three assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 21-of-40 shooting for 52.5 percent, 6-of-14 from three-point range for 42.9 percent and hit 18-of-25 free throws for 72 percent. HTU shot 25-of-57 for 43.9 percent, 2-of-9 three pointers for 22.2 percent and 10-of-14 from the free-throw line for 71.4 percent.

The Saints grabbed 22 rebounds while HTU collected 28. Both teams committed 20 turnovers.
