Late Rally Falls Short Against Tigers
DALLAS (January 4, 2025) – Three players scored in double figures on Saturday afternoon as the Our Lady of the Lake (OLLU) women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought contest to Paul Quinn College (PC) by a score of 73-69. After scoring a career-high 22 points on Thursday against University of the Southwest, Carlea Owens dropped 23 for a new career-high. Julia Plata continued her consistent play on the season, scoring 17 in the loss while Isabella Jaramillo added a season-high 14 points.
The Saints fall to 6-9 overall on the season and 4-8 in Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play.
OLLU got off to a slow start as they watched Paul Quinn jump out to a 7-0 lead, forcing OLLU Head Coach Tanya Ray to take her first timeout of the game. Out of the timeout, Plata got the Saints on the board with her first triple of the game. With 2:34 to play in the first quarter, a layup from Owens off the assist from Samantha Fields gave OLLU its first lead of the game at 13-12. Trailing 13-14 with under a minute to play, another three-pointer from Plata put the Saints in front 16-14 after 10:00.
Five straight points from Jaramillo to start the second frame gave OLLU a 21-14 advantage just over two minutes into the quarter. The Tigers would go on a run of their own to regain the lead at 22-21 just a minute later. The teams would go back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter and the Saints took a 30-29 lead into the lockerroom.
Just as they did in the second frame, the Saints would score the first five points of the third quarter capped off by a three from Alexander Westerdijk Martin to give OLLU a 35-29 lead. After PC took a 37-36 lead at the 6:59 mark, both teams went on a scoring drought that lasted nearly two minutes before the Tigers made a layup to extend their lead to three points at 39-36. PC led for the final 5:00 of the frame, taking a 48-44 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Over the first five minutes of the fourth, PC built its lead to 10 points at 61-51. OLLU battled to stay within striking distance. Trailing by five with 12 seconds to play, Jaramillo banked in a three to cut the Saints deficit to two, but OLLU ran out of time, eventually falling 73-69.
The Saints will return to Mabee Gymnasium on Thursday, January 9 as they welcome Louisiana Christian University. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
