Volleyball Sweeps Avila to Open Play in Bellevue
BELLEVUE, NEB. (Aug. 31, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) volleyball team swept Avila University (AU) 3-0 on Thursday to open play in the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic hosted by Bellevue University. The Saints improve to 3-5 overall while Avila falls to 1-2.
Head Coach Scott Mattera said, "It wasn't a perfect game, but we'll always be happy with a sweep over a solid team, especially when breaking in new people with Mia Dorsey out. Camila Ramirez made great shot choices and Madalyn Gonzalez was great offensively in the middle."
Basics
The Saints defeated the Eagles on Thursday night in the first match of the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic. The Saints tallied double-digit kills in every set and were led by Ramirez with 13. OLLU limited Avila to under .100 hitting percentage in the second and third set.

In the first set, OLLU recorded 19 kills and 10 errors on 54 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .167.
The Saints had 14 kills in the second set and six errors on 32 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .250.
In the third set, OLLU recorded 16 kills and six errors on 51 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .196.
On the offense
Overall, the Saints had 49 kills for a hitting percentage of .197. Avila totaled 26 kills for a hitting percentage of .095.
Ramirez led the Saints with 13 kills. Maddie Jones totaled a team-high seven kills for the Eagles.
Lauren Reynard assisted on 40 plays for the Saints while Daphne Gardner tallied 19 assists for Avila.
Defensive standouts
OLLU had a total of 63 digs, led by Tina Trevino with 17. Gardner tallied 13 digs for the Eagles.
Serving it up
Reynard led the Saints with three service aces. Four different players had one service ace each for the Eagles.

The Saints play two games tomorrow in the tournament. They face Central Methodist University at 11:30 a.m. and Dakota Wesleyan University at 4:30 p.m.
