SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 22, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball squad improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) after beating Texas A&M University-Texarkana (TAMUT) 95-80 on Thursday night. The Eagles fall to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference. The Saints 7-0 start is the best in program history.

History

The Saints were 2-7 against the Eagles prior to the matchup.

Basics

The Saints shot well in the first half at 48.3 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from three-point range. The defense created havoc for the Eagles as they hit only 2-of-9 three-point attempts. Breion Powell scored double-digits in the first half with 10. Wahkil Lopez had four rebounds and the Eagles committed 14 fouls. The Saints had a 10-point advantage at halftime. 

Both squads shot better in the second half. There were 36 fouls called, leading to 75 percent shooting from the free-throw line for the Saints. The Saints shared the ball offensively with eleven players scoring at least one point. The Saints hit half of their field goals. The Eagles had 19 attempts from the free-throw line but only shot 52.6 percent. OLLU had 34 points in the paint and 18 points off turnovers as they won by 15 points. 

Offensive/defensive standouts

Lonzo Rand led the Saints with 11 points, followed by Powell with 10. Powell, Trey Law and Kenyon Elliott had five rebounds each. Elliott and Xavier Purnell led the squad with three assists apiece. 

Texarkana was led by Deovaunta Williams with 19 points. Daryl Houston led the squad with nine rebounds. Payton Chism had three assists for the Eagles.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 26-of-53 from the field for a percentage of 49.1. They shot 8-of-19 from three-point range for 42.1 percent and hit 35-of-49 free throws for 71.4 percent. Texarkana shot 25-of-58 for a percentage of 43.1, 8-of-21 three-pointers for 38.1 percent and 22-of-38 free throws for 57.9 percent. OLLU added 30 rebounds to TAMUT's 35, while the Eagles committed 14 turnovers, and OLLU had 18.
