SAN ANTONIO (May 15, 2023) – The NAIA No. 2-ranked Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team downed Taylor University (TU) 9-1 to begin play in the NAIA Opening Round. The Saints are the No. 1 seed in the San Antonio Bracket, followed by Hope International University (HIU) at No. 2, Campbellsville University at No. 3 and TU at No. 4. OLLU is hosting the tournament at St. Mary's Softball Stadium, and it will conclude on Wednesday.

This was the first meeting between the two programs.
Basics
The Saints started the NAIA Opening Round with a 9-1 victory in six innings over TU. Ariel Montgomery started the scoring for the Saints in the first inning by bringing in one run on a single. Alyssa Flores scored on a wild pitch and Montgomery later scored after an error by the Trojans. Montgomery followed with a solo home run in the third inning. Madison Garza, Deandra Vera, Madison Nunn and Eneli Garza all scored later in the game. Cassandra Valdez pitched all six innings for the Saints and earned the win after striking out four batters. Montgomery finished batting 4-for-4 with three RBIs. The Saints totaled nine hits while limiting the Trojans to two.
