Baseball Falters in Conference Series Versus Texarkana

TEXARKANA, TEXAS (March 18, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team lost three games against Texas A&M University-Texarkana (TAMUT) in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) series over the last two days. The Saints move to 14-15 overall and 6-9 in the RRAC. The Eagles improve to 13-13 overall and 10-5 in conference.

Head Coach Matt Piker commented, "It's plain and simple, we have to play better, and I have to coach better. We have to get rested and get back after it. We have a really quick turnaround this week. I'm excited to see how we bounce back."

History

The Saints were 13-13 against the Eagles prior to the series.

Game One

OLLU's offense struggled in game one. Texarkana took the lead in the first inning by plating two runs. They increased the advantage to three in the fifth inning. Caimyn Holiday put the Saints within one in the sixth inning with a two-run home run that scored Leo Parra. The Eagles scored the last two runs of the contest and won 5-2 in the seven-inning affair. Devin Benavides started on the mound and suffered the loss after going 5.1 innings with four strikeouts. Chase Dunn pitched in relief and faced three batters. D'Artagnan Perez-Padron tallied two hits and was the lone Saint with multiple hits.

Game Two

The Saints totaled four runs on seven hits in game two but lost 7-4. The Eagles scored runs in the first frame similar to game one. They put up three runs which included a two-run home run. The Saints fought back in the second and third innings to shrink the lead to one run. Kobey Allison hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning to score Diego Zuniga, and Nicholas Alonzo singled in the following frame to bring in Jack Kalisky. The Eagles hit another two-run home run in the fifth inning. The Saints found themselves down three runs again and responded in the sixth inning. Vincent Banda stole home and Holiday walked later in the inning with bases loaded. The 5-4 deficit didn't hold for long when the Eagles hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame. They added another run in the eighth inning to secure the 7-4 victory. Noah De La Riva took the loss on the mound after going 1.1 innings with three earned runs. Dunn, Ethan Garza and Hector Rogerio III all pitched in relief.

Game Three

The Saints outhit the Eagles in game three despite the loss. Texarkana produced seven runs in the third inning. OLLU committed one error, one passed ball and two wild pitches in the frame. The Saints scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Banda singled to score one run and Perez-Padron later scored when Anthony Valle reached first base on an error. The Eagles added two more runs in the eighth inning and won 9-2. Donovan Gamez started on the mound and went two innings with three strikeouts. Esai Puente suffered the loss by allowing three earned runs.
